The NICU Helping Hands organization provides support to families with babies in the NICU, transitioning home from the NICU, or experiencing infant loss. Realizing we weren’t putting the same amount of reverence and respect into a baby’s final resting garments as we do adults, Lisa R. Grubbs created NICU Helping Hands’ Angel Gown® Program, which transforms donated wedding gowns into bereavement gowns for families who have lost a baby.
On September 18, 2014, Jenefer and Gabe lost their newborn baby girl. Gracelynn lived for 28 minutes before passing away in the hospital. Thanks to the NICU Helping Hands’ Angel Gown® Program, the grieving parents learned they weren’t alone and that there are people out there willing to sacrifice their time and give love. Now, they hope to one day meet the woman who made Gracelynn’s dress. With tears in his eyes, Gabe describes what the angel gown meant to him — and I guarantee you’ll be touched to the core.
“We simply don’t want families to do the hard stuff alone,” NICU Helping Hands says. “And everything about the NICU and/or infant loss is hard stuff. While it is hard stuff, beautiful things happen when we people step up and commit to walking alongside a family that is hurting. Life is a little bit easier and there is hope in knowing that in spite of the messiness someone is willing to travel the journey with you and that you are not alone.”
